ABOUT THE TRAINING AND RESEARCH INSTITUTE FOR SELF PSYCHOLOGY (TRISP)
- TRISP course brochure in Adobe Acrobat format
When TRISP opened its doors in 1987, it was the first and only self psychology institute. It has been in continuous operation since then providing candidates with complete, balanced, and thorough training in self psychology and the theory of intersubjectivity-the approaches that are now in the forefront of psychoanalysis.
TRISP's intensive four-year certification program with classes conveniently scheduled on alternate Fridays includes course work, personal therapy, supervision and case presentation. Provisionally chartered by The New York State Board of Education, it is a member institute of the National Association for the Advancement of Psychoanalysis (NAAP).
THE TRISP EXPERIENCE
Significant discoveries by Heinz Kohut (1913-1981), the founder of self psychology, including the empathic-introspective observational stance and selfobject transferences (mirroring, idealizing, twin and alter ego) have revolutionized psychoanalysis. The theory of intersubjectivity, which posits that all treatment phenomena are codetermined by the subjectivities of the therapist and patient, has greatly deepened clinical understanding. By the time candidates complete the TRISP certification program they are solidly grounded in the theoretical underpinnings of these exciting developments and expert in their clinical application. In addition, they gain a rich understanding of the evolution of psychoanalysis and the roots of self psychology in classical, ego psychological, and object relations theories. They will be able to distinguish mild, moderate, and severe self disorders and will have developed confidence in treating them. They will have explored such important areas as psychological development, gender and sexuality, and the use of dreams.
Most importantly, TRISP candidates are trained in accordance with the same ideals of empathy and respect they are taught to apply to their clinical work.
PATIENT REFERRALS
TRISP candidates may participate in TRISP Psychological Services, P.C., a moderate-cost clinic. Their participation enables them to obtain patients for their required supervised clinical work, and helps them build their private practices.
