I've been pondering your comments. It seems to me that "rules of thumb" come after years of trail and error experience. I can only talk for myself, however I must admit that at times Ethical guidleines are extremely helpful particularly when I am dreaming up novel techniques and intervention, which while they may be legitimate responses to empathic attunement to the client's situation, also sometimes, have a fair degree of overlay of my own needs and wants. Having some clarity about the role of "frame" has helped me a lot.
