I realise this paper was written some three years ago - however I have just found this site and page. I am a psychotherapist working in private practice in New Zealand. My main focus of interest is in an intersubjective way of working with my patients. My first career was as a theatre director in the UK, where, in 1984, I directed a touring production of Equus. I am interested to know - if Stephanie is still thinking about this play, what she and others would make of Dysart's own longing for Alan's "cantering" - his depreciation of his own life and marriage and his vicarious excitement about his young patient's capacity for ecstacy. It seems to me that the emotional poverty of Dysart's life must influence the intersubjective climate between him and Alan enormously. Thanks to Stephanie for re-awakening my interest in this amazing play once again!
