The use of regression in an intersubjective approach

In "Psychoanalytic Treatment: An Intersubjective Approach" I found the expansion beyond Kohut's limitations to be refreshing. In many ways what I was doing intuitively was described... such as the feeling of interpretation being based on the here and now of the affectual dynamics of the psychoanalytic/psychotherapeutic relationship. My curiousity is the use of regression in this approach to psychoanalysis. Clearly the case illustrations show that information from childhood selfobject failures and derailments was obtained. However, integrating that information into the overall practice of psychoanalysis in this model was unclear to me. Is there the same focus on free association with the need to not direct the client's associations used? Intuitively, I'd say that would not be the case as there is a move away from the "neutral therapist," in classical Freudian analysis. Along the same lines, is there any use of the psychoanalytic couch for facilitating regression consistent with this model. I know both regression and free association are discouraged with psychotic and borderline clients. Thanks in advance, Bruce Bruce Whealton, LCSW whealton@wordsalad.net
