On reflection, perhaps there is a clearer way of expressing what I am confused about- in terms of inside/outside. For stern, the IS system is a subjective experience and therefore "inside" the subjectivity of the person. But for the IS theorists, the intersubjective field is "outside" the subjectivity of the person, as that subjectivity is "inside" it. So, I guess my confusion is centered on how IS theory can simultaneously purport to be a theory inquiring only into subjectivity, when intersubjectivity is "outside" subjectivity- subjectivity is "within" _it_.
