hello, i am a student of the psychoanalytic program at the University of Toronto, and i am also an English language teacher working over the Internet with students from overseas, tutoring them and coaching them using various means, such as Chat, discussion lists, conference boards, and one-to-one Email correspondence. I have had to be very careful to "listen" to their needs instead of imposing my own plans for instruction. The cues over the Internet using the different tools suggest that it might well be easier for one to be empathic in some ways, and crass and harsh if one is not experienced in picking up those cues. "reading between the lines" takes on a whole wider meaning in this context. The need for empathy in such a situation is crucial for success for a rapport, and whether it be face-to-face or via electronic media, there are surefire tell-tale signs of how well a rapport can eventually be developed and though i am using different terminology, such as rapport and cues, and working in a somewhat different context, the need for establishing a link is my most important goal throughout the learning, and modelling that follows.
