When the self experiences a disruption in its sustainig selfobject relationships it was become disorganized which mean it will come apart into its constituents. With constituents thus torn out of the integrating matrix of the cohesive self, they will be noticeable as the constituents in their own right. For example, bodily experiences will become more prominent as bodily constituents are less integrated into the self with the result that the prominence will be symptomatic as hypochondriacal experiences. As for the metaphor of fluidity or plasticity they are Ok. Personally, I like the metaphor of a the self as a jig-saw puzzle that can be shaken up and the pieces re-arranged
