CLOSE READINGS OF
TEXTS: THE WORK OF JUDY GUSS TEICHOLZ
Presenters: Alan Dolber,
PhD, and Valerie Oltarsh, CSW
Dates: Two Wednesday
Evenings: November 6 and November 20, 2002
Time: 8:15 pm
Held before and after
the Teicholz presentation on November 16, these two workshops will address the
differences between self psychology and relational (postmodern) theory as
delineated in her book Kohut, Loewald and the Postmoderns. How does self
psychology fit into the relational world of psychoanalysis? These workshops will
discuss Teicholz’s thoughtful analysis of the self, the developmental point of
view, empathy, authenticity, self disclosure and the varied view of
intersubjectivity.
WORKING WITH
COUPLES: REFLECTIONS ON THEORY AND TECHNIQUE
Presenter: Harriet
Pappenheim, CSW, BCD
Friday, December 13,
2002
Time: 7:30 pm
Harriet Pappenheim will
illustrate the use of certain self psychological concepts that she finds most
helpful while at the same time exploring the application of other theoretical
perspectives. She advocates a mixed model approach, and employing clinical case
examples, she reflects on the usefulness of attachment theory and object
relations theory. Authenticity, spontaneity and an awareness of the
intersubjective nature of the work between therapist and couple are stressed.
REFLECTIONS ON
SUICIDAL CHILDREN
Presenter: Ronald A.
Zirin, PhD
Date: Wednesday,
February 26, 2003
Time: 8:15 pm
This presentation discusses the development of
children’s conception of death and of their own mortality. Case material is
presented to explore the way in which child and therapist work through suicidal
tendencies in self psychologically oriented psychotherapy. Two cases involve
children of five and six years brought for therapy because they wanted or tried
to kill themselves. Parallel material is presented from an adult during whose
therapy a childhood suicide attempt was uncovered.
STICKING UP FOR OURSELVES WITHOUT STICKING IT TO OUR PATIENTS:
Revisioning Analytic Authority and Responsibility in the Embattled Treatment
Presenters: Lynn
Preston, MA, MS, and Ellen Shumsky, CSW
Wednesday, March
19, 2003 at 8:15 pm
The compelling case
presented by Jody Davies at the Stephen A. Mitchell International Relational
Conference (New York, January 2002) will be used as a springboard for comparing
self psychological and other relational approaches as ways of transforming the
toxicity of power struggles in the analytic relationship.
