| With
broadening understandings of therapeutic action and optimal
responsiveness, Kohut's empathic interpretation becomes just one of many
effective analytic contributions. The case presented will deal with the
challenge of a patient who presses for spontaneous emotional engagement
and personal self disclosure from a therapist trained to see her role as
providing sustained empathic attention. This candid presentation will
capture the struggle that ensues. |

| In
nearly two decades of research for his forthcoming biography of Heinz
Kohut, Charles Strozier interviewed many of Kohut's former patients, who
spoke frankly of the way he actually worked as a clinician. Kohut's
evolving clinical style was in fact several paces ahead of his
theoretical writings. Such testimony provides an unusual window into the
evolution of Kohut as a clinician, how he changed along with his theory,
and the implications for contemporary psychoanalysis. |

Paulette Landesman, CSW |

| The
compelling script of eroticized fantasy implores understanding of its
divergent functions and motivations. This presentation will look at
erotic fantasy from three theoretical perspectives on its origin and
transformation: those of Kohut, Stolorow and Atwood, and Lichtenberg.
Clinical material will be presented of a female patient whose intrusive
erotic fantasies embody all three theoretical positions at given points
of a two-year treatment. |
