Self Psychology Page | 22nd Conference Program
Summary
This course is designed for individuals who wish to become more familiar with basic theory and practice in self psychology. From its origins in the seminal work of Heinz Kohut, self psychology has evolved as a theory of normal development, psychopathology, and the therapeutic process. This introductory course will provide an overview of basic concepts in self psychology, with emphasis on selfobject experience and the empathic mode of observation. Traditional concepts of defense, resistance, transference and countertransference will be examined from a self psychological perspective.
There will be two didactic sessions (Thursday evening 7-9 p.m. and Friday morning 9-10 a.m.) presented by Sanford Shapiro M.D. and Jill Gardner Ph.D. followed by a case presentation illustrating the theory (Friday morning 10-11:30 a.m.) presented by Gary Taerk, M.D. and Sam Izenberg M.D.
At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to explain the theoretical and clinical assumptions in self psychology and apply these principles to clinical work.
